FWIW, I don't have any trouble with Mail crashing on any of my Lion systems. I did have the waking issue, but after a beta upgrade cough it seems to have gone away, so there is that. I haven't noticed any greater battery drain but I don't work on battery that often, so that's not conclusive.

I do know of other people who have bugs I don't experience, different from yours. In fact we have a system here that I upgraded to Lion that is behaving really strangely. I think the root of the problem is that sometimes things don't get installed correctly, and you end up with what amounts to a lemon OS.

That's not to excuse Apple in any way - I actually agreed with Marco's recent post where he worried about Apple's software quality slipping. But I think that whatever the issue is will be very difficult to find and fix, because everyone seems to exhibit a different set of symptoms.

Skeuomorphism is UX masturbation. It's the consolation prize for the "3d desktop experience".

Lion is replete with UX snake oil. Many things that were wrong with Mac OS X in version 10.0 are still haunting us, and many other things have gotten worse. It's a collection of marketing bullet points. I only use it so I can run the latest Xcode.

My personal pet peeve for years has been the way memory is consumed by all the superficial features, the buzzing swarm of background processes and who knows what else. 4GB is not enough memory. WTF?

It's enough to make me question the fundamental value(s) of personal computer systems.
